There is a common instinct to avoid "jumpy" shares. We measured what avoiding them costs.
We grouped every stock-month by how much the stock moved on an average day over the prior 20 sessions, then asked the same question: did it touch +20% within 30 sessions?
| Average daily move | Touched +20% |
|---|---|
| Under 1.5% (calm) | 9.2% |
| 1.5% to 3% | 18.3% |
| 3% to 5% | 27.5% |
| Over 5% (wild) | 29.0% |
A calm stock touched +20% in 9.2% of cases. A wild one in 29.0% - more than three times as often.
This should be obvious once stated and is almost never acted on: a stock cannot travel 20% in a month if it does not travel 1% in a day. Volatility is not a side-effect of the move you want. It is the mechanism of it.
The honest other half: the same volatility that carries a stock up 20% carries it down. This lesson is not "buy volatile stocks". It is "if you want a 20% move, calm stocks cannot supply one, and screening for calm screens the move out."
Measured: stocks with sub-1.5% daily volatility touched +20% in 9.2% of 8,993 cases; those above 5% did so in 29.0% of 1,781 cases.
